2020 Goals

The last decade was a blessing for me. Lots of dramatic changes have happened in my life. My business did very well. I sold my business and went FIRE at the age of 35. Real estate investments did amazingly well. I paid off all my mortgages. I hit the million-dollar net worth target. My relationship with my family has improved. I began to learn how to write and started this blog!

Growing up from nothing, was a blessing for me. I’m not going to lie. I was often angry and bitter at the fact that life was so tough on me in my earlier age. I rebelled from my family. I was a troublemaker. Dropped out of high school like an idiot thinking I would make something of myself…

Reflecting on my past, everything has changed. My views and philosophy on life have taken a dramatic transformation. Like someone finally gave me a pair of glasses that I put on and just realized I lived my life half blinded.

I’m ever more grateful and thankful for my life today than ever. Even though I began my new years with a horrible gum infection. The simple fact and realization that I can stay home and get all the rest I can filled my heart with an odd surge of gratefulness. Hard to explain the feeling… but I have a new sense of appreciation for life. Perhaps it helped with having learnt to appreciate the simple things in life early on.

I feel younger at heart today than ever. I feel optimistic about the future and my hunger to learn new things are at an all-time high. It’s amazing what abundance of time can do to your mind. It helped me find my creative side. It gave me the freedom to wonder and dream again. It provided the luxury to get lost in my thoughts and explore my curiosity.

Financial independence is worth it. Retiring early? That part is all up to you. If your chasing FIRE, you will be happy you did when you achieve it. Even after achieving FIRE, I realized I still love setting goals. This will likely never change. I love the sense of joy I get from making progress. So, here are my 2020 goals!

2020 Long Term Goals

  1. 10 Million Net Worth . (2019-In Progress) At my current rate of progress, I may take upwards of anywhere from 15-20 years to hit this target. That means I will be about 55-60 years old by the time I hit this target. Not good. My hopes are to hit this target much sooner. Hopefully in 10-15 years?? All while remaining FIRE. I have no plans to go back to work to achieve this goal.
  2. $10,000 Annual Dividends. (2019-In Progress) This goal has been 58% completed. I estimate by year end, my dividends to be anywhere from $6,600 to $7,200. Unless we have some major negative market catalyst that will throw off company earnings dramatically. My focus will remain high on building out my dividend portfolio this year.
  3. Crowdfunding Investment Target $50,000. (2019-In Progress) With 54.1% completed towards my target, I plan on investing about the same as I did in 2019. Slow and steady on this one as my main focus will remain on the dividend portfolio.
  4. Travel the World for 6 Months With Family and Loved Ones. (2019-In Progress) I have determined my target net worth/vacation ratio to be the following. Net worth $5,000,000/Cost of trip $82,350 = 1.6%. I decided to start saving for this goal as I near my projected ratio of about 2%. At that point, I assume saving $82,350 would be a breeze!
  5. Maintain and Improve Health. (2019-In Progress) Not only is my health important to me but my families and loved ones. This year I will put in more effort to improve the health of not only myself but others around me.
  6. Adopt a Dog. I always wanted to adopt a dog. My first dog back when I was 10-12 years old was a homeless Maltese found on the streets suffering from mal-nutrition and pests all over his body. My father had found him outside coming home from work and brought him home. He was covered in gum and dirt. We shaved his fur completely and washed him. It took 1 month for him to recover and open up to our family but once he did, he was the most loving pet we ever had. Our whole family fell in love with him. RIP coco.
  7. Buy a Car. Looks like it’s about time. The 20 year old car has been acting up a little. Likely not a serious problem but it seems the old guy is showing its age.
  8. Visit Miami, New Orleans, Seattle, Oregon, and San Francisco. I love a good road trip. I rather drive than take planes if I could. I always wanted to drive to key west. Hopefully the weather is great and no hurricanes. New Orleans seems to have lots of great food there. Being a foodie, time to go and eat everything in sight!
  9. Track and Grow Alternative Income sources. Starting this blog has created some interesting micro income sources. I thought it would be interesting to see if I can grow them further. The goal is to achieve this by not making this feel like work. Writing what I want to write about and keeping it fun. In 2019, my alternative micro income sources have totaled $989.95. Target? I guess I’ll shoot for $2,000!

I’m keeping it simple so I can enjoy life and try to be helpful to others. This interview I watched in 2019 really struck a cord with me.

“My revelation in life was… probably came too late but in my upper thirties… where it became clear to me you’re sort of searching for your lifetime for your purpose…. You’re sort of on a search and you convince yourself early in life… my purpose in life is deciding my major in school so you decide your major and you graduate and… guess what you still don’t know what your purpose is… So you keep looking and you think well it’s about getting a job… well no it wasn’t that… and maybe it becomes a promotion, maybe it becomes a marriage, maybe it becomes a child and at some point you recognize the reason we are all here is to help somebody else… that that is the sole reason that we are here and once you get that in your head, as it turns out, life gets so much simpler…” -Tim Cook

Interview can be found here.

Life is hugely about helping others. Our society is built on it. Without it, all of what we have may not be possible.

So, I will end on that note. Have you set your goals for 2020? Thanks for reading.
